Islands of Adventure is Universal’s swing-for-the-fences park — five themed islands ringing a lagoon, each committed to the bit, and the most serious roster of thrill rides in Orlando. This is home to the VelociCoaster, the Hulk, and Hagrid’s, and a lap of the water takes you from a comic strip to a dinosaur island to Hogsmeade in twenty minutes.
It shares a gate-plaza (and a lot of the crowd) with Universal Studios next door, so how you split a day — or two — between the parks is the first thing we sort out for you.
Hogsmeade, brick for brick
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Hogsmeade is the reason a lot of guests come at all. Hogwarts Castle houses the Forbidden Journey; Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure is the best coaster Universal has ever built; and the whole village — Butterbeer, wand shops, snow on the rooftops — is themed to a level that still stops people in their tracks.
Hogsmeade connects by the Hogwarts Express to Diagon Alley over in Universal Studios — a two-park ticket and the right ride order turn that train into a highlight instead of a hassle.
The island that roars
Jurassic Park is two eras in one land: the classic side, with the River Adventure’s plunge past the T. rex, and the new VelociCoaster — a raptor-paddock launch coaster that’s become the headliner of the whole resort. The stone gates, the John Williams score, the jungle: it all still lands.
VelociCoaster draws the longest lines in the park, so we build your morning around getting on it before the island fills up.
Where you will get soaked
Toon Lagoon is the park’s comic-strip corner — Popeye, Bluto, and Dudley Do-Right in loud cartoon color — and it exists mostly to drench you. Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges and Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls are proper water rides, not sprinkles. Bring a poncho or plan to change.
It’s a perfect mid-afternoon island: ride the water when the Florida heat peaks, then dry off in line for something indoors.
The whimsical heart, for the littlest crew
Seuss Landing is the park’s gentlest island — The Cat in the Hat, the Caro-Seuss-el, One Fish Two Fish, and the High in the Sky Trolley — all built straight out of the books, right down to the not-a-straight-line-anywhere architecture. It’s where the youngest of the party get their headliners.
Marvel Super Hero Island sits next door for the opposite mood — the Incredible Hulk Coaster and Spider-Man — so a family with a wide age range can split and meet back up easily.
One long day, or one great half
Islands of Adventure rewards rope drop harder than almost any park in Orlando — be at the gates early, go straight to VelociCoaster and Hagrid’s, and you clear the two hardest rides before the crowd wakes up. After that it’s a lap of the lagoon at your own pace.
Pair it with Universal Studios on a two-park ticket and we’ll sequence both parks, the Hogwarts Express, and Express Pass so the day flows instead of doubling back.
