Royal Caribbean builds the largest cruise ships on Earth — the Icon class, with Icon, Star, and the brand-new Legend of the Seas, are floating resorts with waterparks, surf simulators, ice shows, and whole neighborhoods to get lost in. Most Caribbean sailings also call at Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal's private-island playground in the Bahamas.
The choice that matters most here is ship class. An Icon or Oasis-class ship is the destination — you could never leave and still run out of vacation before you run out of ship. The smaller classes trade some spectacle for more port time and easier days. Same brand, very different trips.

Carnival Cruise Line
Nobody does easy, unpretentious fun like Carnival — and nobody makes cruising more accessible. The Excel-class flagships (Mardi Gras, Celebration, Jubilee) carry BOLT, the first roller coaster at sea, and in 2025 Carnival opened Celebration Key, a purpose-built private destination on Grand Bahama that its Florida and Gulf sailings now feature heavily.
For us, the quiet superpower is geography: Carnival sails from more U.S. home ports than anyone, including Mobile and New Orleans — an easy drive from right here in the Gulf South. No flights, no checked-bag fees, no airport meltdown before the vacation even starts.
Our favorite low-stress first cruise: drive to Mobile or New Orleans, park at the terminal, and be on deck by lunch. We'll have the whole thing booked door to door.
Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian's whole personality is “freestyle” — no assigned dining times, no formal nights unless you feel like it, and more specialty restaurants than you can get through in a week. The newest ships, from the Prima class through Norwegian Aqua and the new Norwegian Luna, are sleek and modern, and The Haven — NCL's ship-within-a-ship suite enclave — is one of the best luxury plays afloat.
Bahamas and Caribbean sailings visit Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian's private island, which keeps getting bigger and better. NCL also shines beyond the Caribbean — it's one of our favorite ways to do Alaska and Europe without the big-ship crowds.

Princess Cruises
Princess is the grown-up dinner party of the big lines — a more relaxed pace, seriously good food, and itineraries built for people who cruise to see places. Nowhere is that clearer than Alaska, where Princess has spent decades building glacier-route expertise, its own wilderness lodges, and rail connections into Denali that turn a cruise into a full land-and-sea expedition.
The newest Sphere-class ships, Sun Princess and Star Princess, are the line's showpieces, and the Medallion wearable handles doors, drinks, and finding your family across the ship without a single lanyard squint.

Celebrity Cruises
Celebrity is the design hotel of the big lines. The Edge-series ships — capped by the new Celebrity Xcel — are all clean lines and rooftop gardens, with the Magic Carpet, a cantilevered orange platform that rides the ship's side as an open-air bar and restaurant. The cooking is the point here: some of the best food afloat, at sea-view tables.
The Retreat, Celebrity's suite enclave with its own restaurant, lounge, and sundeck, delivers a genuine luxury-line experience without giving up big-ship variety. The crowd skews adult without being adults-only — polished, not stuffy.
Celebrity's Infinite Veranda cabins turn the whole room into the balcony with the touch of a button — travelers love them or want the classic kind. We'll tell you which camp you're in before we book the category.
MSC Cruises
MSC is Europe's cruising giant, and it has arrived in America in force — MSC World America sails year-round from its own Miami mega-terminal, with a glass-walled promenade, a full family district, and espresso that would pass inspection in Milan. The fares routinely undercut the other big lines for a newer, bigger ship.
Caribbean sailings center on Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, a private island built around protected waters — the ship stays late, and the lighthouse puts on a light show after dark. Up top, the MSC Yacht Club is the sleeper hit: a keycard-access suite enclave with its own pool, lounge, and restaurant at a price the luxury lines can't touch.

Virgin Voyages
Virgin Voyages is the rebel: adults-only (18+), no buffet, no formal nights, no nickel-and-diming — tips, Wi-Fi, group fitness, and all 20-plus eateries are included in the fare. The four “Lady Ships,” Scarlet Lady through the new Brilliant Lady, feel more boutique hotel than cruise ship, right down to the tattoo parlor and the drag brunch.
Caribbean sailings hit The Beach Club at Bimini, Virgin's beach-club day with a DJ at the pool, and every voyage builds to Scarlet Night, when the whole ship dresses in red and the top deck becomes the party. It converts cruise skeptics on night one.
